Take care of your kidneys to live longer
Did you know that September 2 to September 8 is Kidney Awareness Week?
Dr Gcina Mavuso, a healthcare practitioner, specialising as a General Practitioner (GP), in Kanyamazane says kidney diseases are silent killers, which will largely affect one’s quality of life.
He urges people taking Antiretroviral treatment (ARV) to make it a habit to have their kidneys checked up every after six months.
“Kidney check-ups is very vital for ARV users because one of the tablets which is usually taken at night affects the kidneys. It is necessary therefore to do kidney check-ups every after six months,” he emphasized
.

Here are easy ways to reduce the risk of developing kidney disease
1.Drink plenty of water every day.
2. Avoid non-prescribed tablets.
3. Avoid non-prescribed medication, especially traditional medicines.
4. Keep fit and active
5. Keep regular control of your blood sugar level
6. Eat healthy and keep your weight in check
7. Reduce your salt intake.
8. Limit the amount of processed and restaurant food.
9. Quite smoking
10. Do not take over-the-counter pills on a regular basis.
Common drugs such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen are known to cause kidney damage and disease if taken regularly.
