Woman killed in old mine

Mnisi allegedly slipped and was trapped by soil.

A 44-year-old woman was killed while digging for scrap metal at an old mine in Mntjoli outside Ekulindeni.

On August 3 Ms Thobile Msembi Mnisi, three other women and a male counterpart went to the bottom of the old Msaule Mine in Ekulindeni
village to search for scrap metal.

They usually sold it to scrap yard to earn money. Mnisi allegedly slipped and was trapped by soil. Attempts to rescue her in time were fruitless.Police and paramedics were called to the scene.

“She was certified dead on the scene by paramedics. We never knew there were people collecting scrap in that mine,” explained W/O Mduduzi Dlamini, spokesperson of Ekulindeni police.
Police opened an inquest.

The deceased’s relative, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they were all shocked about the death.
“She leaves behind seven children,” she said. Mnisi will be buried at her home at Sihhulube section this weekend.
