Pupils urged to save rhinos on Youth Day

Children learn more about rhino poaching.

Learners from 14 schools in Matsulu, Luphisi and Mpakeni were urged to be ambassadors against rhino poaching at a Youth Day celebration at Benjamin Primary School’s sports ground in Matsulu.

“We came here to celebrate Youth Day in style, teaching learners to serve rhinos. We taught them about rhino poaching and introduced them to the Rhino Art Campaign. It is aimed at gathering the largest number of hearts and minds messages from young people as a call to action against rhino poaching and all forms of wildlife crime,” says Mr Grant Fowlds, a rhino art ambassador and fund-raiser of the Rhino Art – Let Our Children’s Voices Be Heard conservation educational campaign.

“We have given them a task to tell a story on a A3 paper on how they can save rhinos. We will come back to judge them on their work,” he said. Fowlds added that winners will be invited to view rhinos in the park and have a game experience. The competition is open for the schools until the end of August.

Since its inception in 2013, the Rhino Art – Let Our Children’s Voices Be Heard conservation education campaign has reached over 250 000 schoolchildren in southern Africa and Vietnam, educating them on the value of conserving rhino and the corrupt role of international criminal syndicates in this crisis.

The day was also celebrated with a number of sporting activities.
