Mpumalanga government to deploy armed guards in hospitals and clinics

The Mpumalanga Provincial Government has resolved to deploy armed guards in all provincial hospitals and Community Health Centres.

This follows a number of robbery incidences that took place in various health facilities over the past few months.

The latest incident occurred last month in Mapulaneng Hospital where a doctor was nearly shot by robbers who were conducting a robbery at the doctor’s residence.

According to a statement from the Department of Community Safety and Security and Liaison, yesterday MEC for Health, Mr Gillion Mashego, MEC for Finance, Mr Eric Kholwane and MEC for Community Safety and Security and Liaison, Mr Pat Ngomane held a meeting where a security situational analysis was conducted on safety in all the health facilities.

The meeting resolved that armed guards will be deployed with immediate effect to ensure the safety of our people, including patients, doctors and nurses.
