Eleven people died of listeriosis in Mpumalanga

This was revealed by the MEC of health, Mr Gillion Mashego during the tabling of the more than R13 billion budget at the legislature recently.

The department of health has recorded 47 cases of Listeriosis with 11 fatalities in various hospitals across Mpumalanga province from January last year to date.

“In response to the reported cases of Listeriosis, the department is working closely together with other stakeholders such as the district municipality, the National Health laboratory services, private laboratories, private health facilities, the department of agriculture, rural development land and environmental affairs to contain and stop the spread of the disease,” Mashego said

“We have also been issuing alerts to conscientize our communities on how they can prevent the disease,” he added.

How to recognize the illness?

Other people can be asymptomatic while carrying the bacteria.
Symptoms includes mild fever, muscle pain, general body pains, nausea ,vomiting and diarrhoea.
To High risk people, the bacteria can spread to nervous system and cause meningitis causing headache, confusion, loss of balance and confusion.
