Theme: Memories, orality and leadership: Beyond the rainbow nation
Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu left an indelible mark in the lives and memories of South Africans. Their commitment and contribution to a better life for all can be summarized in the words of Mother Theresa when she said: “Do things for people, not because of who they are or what they do in return, but because of who you are.”

Mandela became the first black president in the democratic South Africa.

During his presidency, South Africa came to be identifed as the rainbow nation where our country was nicknamed a
rainbow nation. South Africans from different racial groups celebrated many victories and accomplishments together, especially sporting events and the adoption of the new constitution, as a unied nation.

Is South Africa still a rainbow nation?
