Slow down for the Loskop marathon athletes

This year marks the 32nd year of this much-loved event on the calendar for athletes.

Motorists using the N4 between Middleburg and Loskop Dam are urged to be cautious of athletes on the road.

Today (Saturday) hundreds of runners from the province and beyond are expected to race in the Forever Resort 50km Loskop
Marathon.

Sibongile Nkosi, spokesperson for the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation, called on motorists to be extra careful for athletes on
the road. She added that arrangements had been made with the traffic department for the closure and monitor of the road from around 05:00 – when the marathon
starts – until all athletes had reached the finishing line.

“We appeal with motorists to cooperate with us. We also send our sincere apologies for inconveniencing them at this time,” she said.

Nkosi stated that the marathon is the result of a fruitful and much-appreciated partnership between the department and SA Forever Resort.

“As a department we are mandated to develop sport in the province. Hence we had sponsored 190 athletes to participate in this marathon, 100 of them are from schools in all the regions of the province and 90 athletes come from clubs in previously disadvantaged areas,” she explained.

“Sport unite people from different races and with such a marathon we hope to address issues of social cohesion and nation building,” Nkosi concluded.
