Increased police visibility on roads this Easter

Mabuza said much focus will be on the N4, N11, N2, N3, N17, R40 and R573. He also urged motorists to refrain from the habit of flicking lights to alert other motorists of police operations ahead.

Traffic officers, in conjunction with other law enforcers from all municipalities across the province, will be visible along all the major roads of the province to ensure a safe Easter weekend for all.

“It is our normal practice that during Easter and the festive season, we double our efforts as law enforcers in the province. No official will be on leave these Easter holidays. Our plan is to collaborate with law enforcers in all municipalities with the provincial traffic police to ensure safety on the roads of the province.

“We will be visible on all major roads of the province, conducting road blocks, patrols, road side checks and road safety rest stops to encourage long-distance drivers to rest,” explains Mr Joseph Mabuza from the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison.

• Do not overload the vehicle.
• Try to avoid driving after dark if possible.
• Have a good rest before you embark on your journey.
• Take safety breaks/rest stops every two hours or 200km.
• Never drink and drive.
• Try to recognize potentially dangerous drivers and pedestrians and keep well clear of them.
• Be visible and drive with your lights on.
• Headlights should be dipped well before an approaching vehicle is within the range of the main beam.
• Always wear your seat belt, and check to see that everyone in the car is wearing theirs.
