MEC Manzini urges drivers to ensure operating licences are in order

She also warned motorists against overloading, speeding, operating without licences and operating on unauthorized routes.

Public transport operators need to see to it that their operating licences are in order this Easter holidays.

MEC Sasekani Manzini for the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport cautioned all road users; particularly public transport operators including buses, minibus taxis and freight; to apply for the special operating licence for routes they do not normally operate in.

“Over and above the mandatory operating licences required in terms of the National Land Transport Act (NLTA), all public transport operators who will be ferrying commuters to churches and any other areas of interest are urged to apply for a Special Operating Licence for that particular route,” she said

The department will intensify its law enforcement operations as public transport inspectors will be deployed throughout the province. This will be done in partnership with various law enforcement stakeholders.

“Operators need to comply with all the rules of the road, ensure that the vehicles are roadworthy and avoid overloading and speeding at all costs. It is equally important that the
driver is fit to be on the road and rests every two hours or 200 km of their journey to combat fatigue, since it is one of the causes of road accidents,” she said.
