Six suspects arrested during attempted heist

The suspects were found in possession of four firearms, an R4 rifle and three pistols

Six suspects were arrested during an attempted cash-in-transit heist by members of the SAPS from Mpumalanga and Limpopo tracking teams.

According to a statement from the SAPS, the villains aged between 31 and 39 were arrested on March 15 at about 11:30 in Lydenburg after an intelligence-driven operation was carried out by the joint team.

They are expected to appear in the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

“The suspects allegedly abandoned their planned heist and fled the scene, however, police managed to corner them at the Lydenburg/Ohrigstad/Burgersfort crossing.

The suspects abandoned their vehicles – a silver Mercedes-Benz and a silver Volkswagen Polo – and tried to flee on foot, but were no match for the men in blue who managed to catch them.

The Mercedes-Benz was found to have been stolen in Mhala, near Acornhoek earlier that day while the Volkswagen Polo allegedly belonged to one of the suspects,” said SAPS spokesperson Col Mtsholi Bhembe.

“The suspects were found in possession of four firearms, an R4 rifle and three pistols. They are facing charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and possession of a stolen motor vehicle,” he explained.

Police are investigating the possibility of the gang being involved in past heists in and around the province.
