Two suspects remanded in custody for rape

Police were informed and the victim was taken to the hospital where the rape was confirmed

Two men were remanded in custody for allegedly raping minors in two separate incidents.

The suspects appeared in court on Tuesday.The first incident is of a 65-year-old man, who appeared before the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl from Block A, near Tonga outside Malalane.

According to information with the police, the suspect is the victim’s neighbour and he went to the victim’s home while the parent was away.

“He knocked and the innocent girl opened because she was familiar with the voice. The suspect then allegedly raped her and threatened to kill her if she told anyone. This suspect continued up until this year and she could not handle the abuse. She then wrote a note to her friend in class, who, in turn, showed their teacher and the victim’s mother,” said Sgt Gerald Sedibe, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga police.

Police were informed and the victim was taken to the hospital where the rape was confirmed and suspect was arrested.

The case was postponed to February 27 for formal bail applications.

The second incident is of a 64-year-old suspect who was remanded in custody at the Balfour Magistrate’s Court for raping a seven-year-old.

“It is alleged that the minor was picking fruits (peaches) from the suspect’s yard when the suspect forced her inside his shack and raped her.

Her cousin saw the incident and called the victim’s mother. They went to the shack and found the suspect still dressing up. Police were called and he was arrested. His case was postponed to February 26, for formal bail application,” said Sedibe.
