Tonga police presents school shoes for needy learners

What was a routine safety awareness campaign by the police changed the lives of the learners when one of them was spotted walking bare footed in school by the police.

Walking bare foot to school is now a thing of the past for three needy learners from Mphoti Primary School who received brand new school shoes from the members of the Tonga police.

“A follow-up was done and it was established that the learner lives with his unemployed parents. Sgt Phuthuma Madonsela was touched by the situation and brought it to the attention of the station commander, Brig Velisiwe Mdaka,” explained Brig Leonard Hlathi.

He said the police then raised funds and the 13-year-old boy was presented with two pairs of school shoes.

Two other learners in a similar situation were spotted during the handover. One of them lives with his grandmother and the other with his mother who is a farm worker.

“Donations for them were also made by the police and they too received a pair of brand new shoes from the police,” Hlathi added.

The provincial commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, Lt Gen Mondli Zuma applauded the zeal displayed by the station in helping the needy.

He said it would go a long way in eradicating the trust deficit that exists between the police and the community.
