Festive season operation nets another 524 suspects

Since the Festive Season Operation commenced, a total of 3 200 suspects have been brought to book so far

MBOMBELA – Festive Season Operation which is executed by multiple forces within the SAPS and other external stakeholders is continuing to curb the scourge of crime in our province.
Another 524 people were brought to book as a result of the operation which has been executed from 14 December 2017 to date.

They were arrested for different offences including 96 for drug-related crimes, 130 driving under the influence of alcohol, 67 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, eight for sexual assault, two for murder and others.
The team further seized 10 stolen motor vehicles, five firearms, 18 ammunition, narcotics drugs (nyaope, heroine, crack cocaine, etc), six knives, liquor and other stolen as well as illegal items. The team also issued a total of 1 314 traffic fines to motorists for violation of the Road Traffic Act.

The suspects appeared today before the different Magistrates’ Courts in the province.
The provincial commissioner, Lt Gen Mondli Zuma, appreciated the joint effort amongst the SAPS and other security agencies during the execution of the operational duties.

“If it was not for the joint effort between the teams, the 3 200 people arrested and all the confiscated items would have not been achieved. We will continue to take action against any wrongdoers to ensure that our people enjoy a safe and secure festive season,”said Zuma.
