VIDEO: Suicide is not the answer – Dr Abbey Mdhuli

This shows how serious suicide is. Possible reasons behind suicide is that a person thinks it is the only way out. It is a way out of a particular situation and challenges.

There has been a spate of children committing suicide, particularly in Ehlanzeni region for the past five years. Recently, a nine-year-old learner was found hanging on a tree in Nkomazi. In a separate incident, an 18-year-old learner from Tinkhontele Secondary School in Matsulu last week.

Child psychologist, Dr Abbey Mdhuli gives possible motives behind suicide: I have observed the behaviour that leads to suicide. In the past five years in Ehlanzeni region I have attended 60 funerals.

This symptom is a sign of crying out for help. There is a misunderstanding that I get from the survivors. They usually say their actions were meant to teach their loved ones a lesson for them to be taken seriously.

Another factor is that children out there have anger, hopelessness, poverty and fear. As a result, they attempt suicide, however, at times they survive because they have not contemplated it properly. Then they channel their minds to accept what will happen and then they commit suicide. As the community we need to observe the trend. We need to listen to our children, we need to help them see the light, offer hope and to empower to restore self-dignity. Proactive youth structures need to be involved. Moreover, there are two lessons we learn when someone has committed suicide: introspect our relationships and how we treat one another. There is life and hope, suicide is not the answer.
