Pastor arrested for alleged human trafficking

He was arrested by members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Unit.

A 32-year-old pastor was arrested for alleged human trafficking on Wednesday.

He will appear in the Eerstehoek Magistrate’s Court in Gert Sibande District Municipality on Friday.

He was arrested by members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Unit.

Capt Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, spokesperson for the Hawks, said they had received a tip-off.

“We followed up on information received on November 10. It was regarding a 22-year-old undocumented victim who was allegedly smuggled into the country from Swaziland. The suspect had allegedly promised the victim a salary to play musical instruments in his church. The suspect is also from Swaziland,” she said.

“A couple of months later, the victim realised that the suspect was not sticking to his end of the bargain. He then decided to go back to his home country. He was apprehended by immigration officials while attempting to cross the border near Oshoek port of entry. He then shared his story with the officials and the matter was referred to the Hawks for investigation which resulted in the suspect’s arrest.”
