Hawkers protest over working permits

They also alleged that some law enforcers from the municipality gave foreign nationals preference over local people.

MBOMBELA – Disgruntled hawkers who sell in Mbombela abandoned their daily work and marched to the City of Mbombela Local Municipality to deliver their list of grievances today.

They chanted and sang while brandishing placards.  The hawkers blamed the municipality for delaying the process of issuing them with permits to work freely.
They also alleged that some law enforcers from the municipality gave foreign nationals preference over local people.

Dumsani Mahlalela, the deputy chairperson for Mpumalanga Traders said, “The treatment we are getting from the municipality is so bad. It is not fair that a South African can be removed from her place just for it to be given to someone who is from outside the country. Not that we don’t want to work with foreign nationals, but what we are saying the municipality must stick to the laws”.

Their memorandum was received by the deputy municipal manager, Mr Patrick Msibi.
“We have taken note of their concerns, they are realistic. We will work with the relevant department in the municipality to try and find amicable solutions,” said Msibi.  A response will be given in one week.
