Traffic cops appear in court for corruption charges

The officials committed these offences while performing their duties on various roads of the province.

Eight traffic cops recently appeared in court for allegedly defeating the ends of justice and corruption. Capt Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, spokesperson for the Hawks in Mpumalanga said that 12 traffic officials were arrested in March and only eight appeared in court.

The officers are accused of allegedly receiving bribes not only from local motorists, but even from international tourists.

The suspects, namely Ms Precious Phindile Mdluli (37), Mr Selvy Peace Ngobeni (36), Ms Sebenzile Siwela (40), Mr Molao Reuben Moreku (51) Ms Delco Mashele (33), Ms Nomcebo Nomsa Mthobeni (39) , Mr Albert Muzi Motha (45) and Mr Cleopas Vusi Mabuza (35).

The Hawks launched an investigation after receiving information that there were traffic officers who were involved in corrupt activities. “A complaint was received from the department of tourism. The complaint was about an accused who allegedly demanded a bribe in order not to issue a fine notice,”

“Mashele, Motha, Thombothi, Mabuza, Mdluli were charged and they will appear at Mhala court on November 6. Moreku will appear at Bushbuckridge court on December 24 for centralisation. Ngobeni and Siwela will appear at Mapulaneng court for centralisation on October 25,” said Sekgotodi.
