The two told a complainant that they have an informer that needed money to trace the complainant’s car that was stolen during the robbery.

A police officer and a former police officer were sentenced for corruption on Friday October 27 at the Middelburg Regional Court.
Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Major General Zodwa Mokoena said that former police detective warrant officer Jan Maphanga and Sonjana Malatji were charged after they took money from a house robbery complainant.

“Maphanga resigned in 2007 and Malatji is still working at Witbank detectives. The two told a complainant that they have an informer that needed money to trace the complainant’s car that was stolen during the robbery. By the time they told the complainant, the vehicle was already recovered and placed as an exhibit.
The house robbery case was reported in April 2007,” said Mokoena.
The complainant of the case died, although it was after he had given evidence.

“The duo was sentenced to 1 500 hours each. It was explained to them that from November 3, 2017 they must start serving their sentence. They will spend every weekend in prison until they finish their sentence. They go into prison on Friday and on Sunday afternoon they go out. This will serve as a warning to our members not to involve themselves in illegal activities but to adhere to the SAPS code of conduct,” said Mokoena.
She further applauded the investigating officer for the hard work and perseverance in ensuring that justice is served.
