Update: Taxi drivers demand scholar transport tenders

Taxi commuters were stranded and some arrived late for work.

Taxi drivers disrupted traffic on Friday morning. Some of the issues they are complaining about include tenders of which they claim are given to people who reside out of the province.

Fanyana  Sibanyoni, chairperson  of South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) says  the industry  demands scholar transport to be handed over to taxis. “The routes operated by the taxi industry were taken away from us and given to Habana Transport in Ermelo, of which the owner is not even from the province.  We are saying enough is enough.”

“We want our routes back; our operators are also not given operating permits in time. We want to have full access to operate in the subsidised routes,”

Commuters were left stranded in Mbombela.

“I was supposed to be at work before 08:30 however that was impossible. Even buses were delayed due to the strike,” said Bhekizwe Bhiya, a resident of Barberton.

SANTACO said that if their demands are not met they will make the province ungovernable.” For now we will go back to our daily jobs peacefully. We have asked our members not to burn Buscor buses. If our demands are not addressed by November 10 we will shut down the entire province.”
