Suspects found guilty for escaping from custody

They were rearrested in July 2015 and sentenced to two years imprisonment for house robbery.

MBOMBELA – Two suspects were found guilty yesterday by Nelspruit Regional Court for escaping from lawful custody.

The suspects, Mthobisi Lennox Ngwenyama and Sabelo Sunboy Lubisi escaped from custody on May 13, 2015 when they were arrested for house robbery. It is alleged that after they managed to escape, they went further and committed crimes which include an attempted murder of Mr Sizin Shabangu and his wife at their home in Chochocho and setting their two vehicles alight.

After two days after the incident, the pair allegedly went to the house of a police officer at Phola Park who was investigating their house robbery case. They waited for him and on his arrival, they shot him while still inside his car.

The investigation indicated that the motive for his killing was because he was investigating a case against them where they were linked through fingerprints. This publication learnt that they are still in custody because they have outstanding cases in Skukuza for rhino poaching. The sentencing will commence today at the high court.
