More teachers resigning in Mpumalanga

MEC for education, Ms Regina Mhaule has sent a stern warning to teachers who are resigning in the province.

“Please refrain from resigning, the money you will get from resigning looks like it had been bewitched, you get it, use it and it gets finished,” said Mhaule while addressing provincial winners and nominees of the 18th annual National Teachers Awards at Mbombela stadium on Friday.

Mhaule revealed that from the 877 teachers who left the system between last year and March 31, a total of 588 are those who resigned.
“They all come back broke, begging to be re-employed,” she said. She added that most teachers who resigned would cite marital problems, mainly divorce as the main cause for their resignations. ” Men and women alike would say their spouses were divorcing them and they didn’t want them to receive a share of their money,” she said.

Mhaule said school governing bodies and principals should give first employment preferences to young graduates from tertiary institutions than re appointing those teachers who resigned.

Provincial winners will represent the province in the National Teachers Awards on a date yet to be announced.
