According to Thomas Myeni, the head of education at the centre, 26 offenders will write the examinations, which is an increase compared to last year.
“Eight of them are from the youth correctional centre and 18 from the maximum centre. They started preparing for the exams as soon as schools reopened to make sure they covered all the study material,” explained Myeni.
“Our educators worked tirelessly to ensure that the syllabus is completely covered. We worked extra hours, even on weekends, to make sure that we teach the offenders all they need to know,” he added.

The management area has two full-time schools, Umlalati (Barberton Town Youth Centre) and Vuselela (Barberton Maximum Prison).
Last year the Barberton Management Area had 23 candidates who wrote the matric examination and achieved a 82 per cent pass rate. Umlalati had six candidates and achieved 100 per cent pass while Vuselela had 17 candidates, of which, 13 passed and four failed resulting to a 76,47 per cent pass rate.
