UPDATE: Bogus doctor remanded in custody for contravening Health Act

A probe revealed that he was not registered with medical council of South Africa as required and was therefore practicing illegally, using traditional medicines and abortion tablets.

A joint operation by members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Unit and Health Professions Council of South Africa resulted in the arrest of 46-year-old Abubakari Kaweesa in Malalane on Tuesday for  Contravention of the Health Professional Act 56/1974, Choice on termination Pregnancy Act 92/1996 and the Medicine Act 101/1996.

Investigations started after complaints were received concerning a bogus doctor who was allegedly operating an illegal surgery at Malelane village, Mpumalanga. The suspect was nabbed while in the process of allegedly carrying out yet another illegal abortion act to a client who had apparently paid R700.00 for his services.

The abortion pills found at Abubakari Kaweesa’s premises.

The suspect appeared before the Malalane Magistrate’s Court today and he was remanded in custody and the case is postponed to October 18, 2017.
