Sun International warns about fake Miss Teen SA instagram account

The account makes use of the official Miss South Africa 2017 branding, which has been manipulated and claims to be the official account for Miss Teen SA.

Sun International, the license holder of Miss South Africa, wishes to inform the public of a fake Instagram account that has been brought to their attention.

Says Sun International’s Claudia Henkel: “Sun International and its partners have no affiliation with the Miss Teen SA Instagram account that has abused our Miss South Africa logo to lend credibility to this fake page. We do not endorse any content published or prizes offered on this page.

We have escalated our concerns and are taking the necessary steps to ensure that we address this as a matter of urgency. Miss South Africa has a proud pedigree and reputation. Our goal is to support bold, confident and beautiful young women who have the power to inspire a nation and make a difference.”

Sun International cautions the public not to engage with sites that are not verified or try to solicit personal information or images. Anyone who has interacted with a site such as this fake Instagram account should change their login credentials immediately to guard against any potential compromise of personal details.

The Digital Law Company’s Emma Sadleir said this type of scam is prevalent on social media, fraudsters will use platforms such as Miss Teen SA and modelling companies to prey on young victims. “I urge all teenagers using social media platforms to be very careful and mindful about who they are interacting with. Be sceptical and cynical, and
remember that anyone can pretend to be someone else online. Do not send private pictures to people you meet online, no matter how legitimate they appear to be or how long you’ve been chatting to them,” said Sadleir.
