Two people were killed on Saturday outside the stadium following a stampede. Another 17 were injured.
Jacques Grobbelaar, the chief executive officer of Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA), expressed his condolences to the families of all those who have been affected by the incident. “We wish to express or condolences to the families of all those who are affected by the incident today. This is extremely unfortunate as solid security plans were in place to ensure that this is a risk-free event. At kick-off, there was no reason to believe that the game needed to be delayed, given that the stadium was half full,” he said.
