Traffic officer stabbed while on duty

The traffic officer sustained serious injuries and is still recovering at a hospital in Mbombela.

KAMHLUSHWA – A traffic officer was stabbed by an assailant whilst on duty. The incident occurred on the D797 Road between Tonga and Kamhlushwa on Friday.

It is alleged that the suspect was initially travelling in a minibus taxi, whereby, he had allegedly threatened to stab fellow passengers.

When the driver realised that there were traffic officers ahead, he stopped the vehicle and ordered the suspect to alight. The driver commenced with the journey.

The suspect then turned on the traffic officers and demanded taxi fare. One of the officers was stabbed when they refused to comply with suspect’s demand. The suspect had become agitated and started throwing stones at the traffic officers. The officers then shot at him in the arm in a bid to arrest him. The traffic officer sustained serious injuries and is still recovering at a hospital in Mbombela.

The suspect is also receiving treatment for the shot in Tonga Hospital under police guard. He is expected to appear at the Tonga Magistrate’s Court as soon as he is fit to stand trial.

The suspect was charged with assault with the intention to do grievous bodily harm, possession of a dangerous weapon and malicious damage to property.
