Mpakeni Mlegeni land claimants want their land back

The Mpakeni- Mlegeni land claimants alleges that government bought land like spaza shops from corrupt officials who used their names.

MBOMBELA – Hundreds land claimants from the Mpakeni Mlegeni Land Claims peacefully marched through the streets of Mbombela.

They handed over their memorandum to the offices of Rural Development and Land Restitution in the CBD on Monday morning.

The peaceful march was led by SANCO’s regional secretary, Chris Mashele and gained support from various political leaders and residents at large.

Whilst picketing outside the offices, the residents said they were tired of empty promises made to them by government and need their land back and nothing else.

They also mentioned the issue of corrupt officials whom they accused of claiming land using the claimants’ names only for their own selfish gains.

The demands include delivery of land parcels brought by government to beneficiaries, engagement of beneficiaries on a quarterly basis regarding issues of land claims.

The residents demanded responses to their demands within seven days.

Mr Lucas Mufamadi, the director of operations in the department received the memorandum and promised claimants that it will be responded to accordingly in due course.
