Team Mpumalanga ready to conquer national finals

The province will also be participating at the inaugural National Rural Sport Programme finals in Polokwane from 10 – 14 July

MBOMBELA – Athletes from Mpumalanga will be going for glory at the National Winter Games Championships in Durban, starting on July 10.

Team Mpumalanga will be competing for top honours against the other provinces in the week long tournament. The Winter Games comprises of football, netball, chess, hockey, rugby 15, tennis, volleyball, kho-kho and jukskei.

“Team Mpumalanga will prepare for the Winter Games with a two-day training camp in Secunda on July 8 and 9. The aim of the training camp is to get the athletes ready for the tournament, “ says the department’s Sibongile Nkosi.

Meanwhile, the province will also be participating at the inaugural National Rural Sport Programme finals in Polokwane from 10 – 14 July.

The Rural Sport Development Programme is government’s drive to develop sport in previously disadvantaged areas.

The aim of the programme is to revive sport and unearth talent in the rural areas with special focus on areas that are under the Traditional Authorities and in the province it was piloted in Mbuyane and Msogwaba Traditional Affairs.
