Memorial service for 18 crash victims

Ngomane has urged motorists to be cautious at all the times when using the road to ensure maximum safety of all road users.

The memorial service of the 18 passengers who died in the head-on collision between two mini buses and a truck on the R541 between Badplass and Machadodorp in Mpumalanga, will be held at a local stadium at Emthonjeni Township in Machadodorp on Friday.

The MEC for the Department of Community Safety, Security and liaison in Mpumalanga, Pat Ngomane, Road Traffic Management and Corporation (RTMC) and the mine management have already met with the family members of the deceased to arrange the burial. One among the 18 has been buried already while six of them will be buried in the local area, whereas the rest will be buried separately in their respective areas since they are from other provinces such as KwaZulu Natal, Free State, Eastern Cape and Limpopo.

Meanwhile, the driver of the truck, a Mozambican national, has appeared in the Machadodorp Magistrate’s court where he was reminded back to custody facing 18 charges of culpable homicide.
