A grade R teacher allegedly assaults learner (5)

A five-year-old grade R learner from a public school on the outskirts of White River sustained injuries to an eye when his teacher allegedly hit him with a ruler him in class.

WHITE RIVER – The boy’s mother, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, said she got the shock of life on the evening of May 8. Her son returned home from school with a bruised and bloodied eye which could hardly open.

“He told me he was beaten by his teacher in school. I tried to engage the school on this, but up to today, nobody showed up to come to address this matter with me. Instead, I was told to go the school. I have since seen doctors with my boy and there are still to run more tests on his eye,” she said.

Jasper Zwane, spokesperson for the department said the department had not received any formal complaint from the parent on this issue.

He advised parents to inform the department of all misconduct.

“Letters of complaint can be delivered either to the principal, circuit director or circuit managers of the department,” he said.

A case of assault was opened at White River Police Station Const Cynthia Mbokodo, the local police spokesperson said, “I can confirm that there was an arrest made on May 11 in regard to this case. The suspect will appear before White River Magistrate’s Court on May 17 on charges of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm”.
