MEC warns traffic offices not to take bribe

Traffic officers who will be tempted to accept bribes from motorists over the Easter holidays, will face the full might of the law.

MBOMBELA – The MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Mr Pat Ngomane, has sent out this stern warning during the official launch of the road-safety Easter campaign on Tuesday at Mbombela Stadium.

He said this year history will be made in the province as they want zero tolerance when it comes to tackling road safety.

• Eleven traffic officers arrested for corruption

“We are more than ready as a department for the holidays as much as we are expecting high traffic volumes on our roads.
“As from today, we will be conducting roadblocks at various busy thoroughfares in the province which include the R40, N4 and R23, and even at our port of entries security is tight,” Ngomane explained.

He emphasised they will not win this battle alone, but they need the full commitment of the people and all drivers.
“Community members must speak out when it comes to corruption, including incidents where traffic officers are demanding or accepting bribes from the motorists so that the law will take its course. We want our officials to be disciplined,” said Ngomane. He indicated that the greatest challenge that contributes hugely to road accidents is excessive speed and driving under the influence of alcohol.”

“We need to deal with illegal taverns and the ones failing to close at the stipulated time. We are moving in a positive direction, because last week we held a meeting with tavern owners and the liquor board. We discussed many issues which included closing times and licences,” he concluded.
