Security guards working under unbearable conditions

Ever since the guardroom was damaged last November, nothing has been done to fix it

BARBERTON – Security guards stationed at the offices of the Department of Social Development in the Umjindi sub-region claim that they are working under unbearable conditions.

This after their guardroom within the department premises situated at Emjindini was left damaged, allegedly by a car belonging to personnel working for the department last November.

A guard, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation, says ever since the guardroom was damaged last November, nothing has been done to fix it.

“The recent heavy rains started to pour and ended on us. When it’s windy, we are exposed to cold conditions. The building can collapse on us at any time. Some guards prefer to work outside the guardroom, which is against the contract agreement our company has with the department, for the sake of their safety,” said the guard.

Mr Ronnie Masilela, department spokesman, said they are aware that the building was damaged and that they are in the process of fixing it. “As we speak, the supplier is on site busy assessing the damage,” said Masilela.

Asked as to why there was a delay, Masilela said it was caused by their process of procurement.
