Chief whip interacts with residents in public hearing

Community members raise their concerns with local mines during a public hearing of the legislature.

BARBERTON – Young people in this area have resorted to alcohol abuse as a result of unemployment.
This was revealed  during the public hearing on the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Amendment Bill that was held yesterday at the community hall hosted by the provincial legislature.
The chief whip of the legislature, Mr Johan Mkhatshwa indicated that he is very shocked to find out that this town is surrounded by mines, but they are not doing justice to the people.
“I’m very shocked that to find out that the mines are not doing justice to the youth in terms of creating job opportunities and employ local people,” said Mkhatshwa.
The objective of the hearing was to teach people about the Bill and to hear challenges that are faced by community members on minerals resource issues.
