Communities urged to be cautious of flooded rivers

The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) has cautioned communities and road users to exercise caution when crossing rivers and driving on the roads of the province.

MBOMBELA-Mpumalanga is among the provinces that are currently experiencing torrential rains since last week, causing water levels to rise in the rivers, dams and water streams.

MEC for the department, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni has reiterated safety measures to prevent potential loss of lives.

“The water levels are rising due to the torrential rains. Our roads are slippery. We urge our communities to exercise caution when crossing rivers and dams.

Furthermore, we urge road users to drive carefully to prevent potential accidents that may lead to loss of lives and injuries. Prevention of loss of lives is everybody’s business,” she says.

She urged that municipal disaster management units are on a high alert to provide support in emergency and in life threatening cases.

Mtshweni also urges communities to report emergency cases to the Disaster Management Toll free number: 0800 202 507.
