Storm damages 15 mud houses

Mpumalanga province remain on high alert despite the fact that Cyclone Dineo is predicted to be targeting Botswana and Namibia.

MBOMBELA – So far 15 mud houses collapsed in the Louisville area following Thursday’s heavy rains and storm.

“The Nkomazi municipality’s disaster management team is busy around the area making assessment to see the damages and on how the affected home owners can be assisted,” explained George Mthethwa, spokesperson for the department of Cooperative and Traditional Affairs (Cogta).

Mthethwa added that a driver also died and two passengers were killed after he lost control of a car in Barberton on Thursday night.

“We are not scaling down in terms of readiness. Our relief material that includes sponges, building material for collapsible houses, stoves and water purification material is on standby for any eventuality,” he explains.

The City of Mbombela, Nkomazi Local Municipality and Bushbuckridge have people on standby. In Mbombela 50 personnel and 25 vehicles are on standby for any emergency this weekend.
