Gerrie Nel quits NPA to join AfriForum

It was reported that he will be joining lobby group, AfriForum.

Eminent state prosecutor Advocate Gerrie Nel handed in his resignation to the National Prosecuting Authority yesterday.
It was reported that he will be joining lobby group, AfriForum.

According to reports, he will start a private prosecutions unit. However, AfriForum is yet to confirm.
Nel has a successful track record of prosecuting high-profile convicts such as disgraced former police commissioner Jackie Selebi and fallen Paralympian champion, Oscar Pistorius.

Nel is a former head of the now obsolete Scorpions in Gauteng. He also headed the Scorpions’ Operation Bad Guys investigation into Selebi and the late mining tycoon, Brett Kebble.

He received an international prosecutors’ award for his successful prosecutions.
In 2008 Nel was arrested on false fraud charges while pursuing Selebi. It later occurred that suspended deputy NPA head, Nomgcobo Jiba, was involved in securing an arrest warrant against Nel.

In 2011 City Press reported that Jiba’s hostility against Nel was caused by his involvement in a fraud case against her husband, Booker Nhantsi. Dubbed as the “bulldog” prosecutor, Nel is a former provincial wrestler who teaches the sport to schoolchildren.
