Car theft increases in Matsulu

The number of cars stolen from the township is increasing as we approach the festive season.

MATSULU – The number of cars stolen from the township is increasing as we approach the festive season.

In a recent incident, Mr Dumisani Nkosi became a victim of assault and his vehicle was stolen from his home. “It was about 01.00 on Saturday morning when two men broke into my house.

They used a crow bar to break the burglar. I did not hear any sound until they were inside my room. I turned around to look at who it was, I was badly beaten on my head with the pistols. They then used my phone charger to tie my hands, a tie was used to tie my legs and a scarf to cover my mouth,” he said.

Nkosi explained that he was then covered with a blanket. He said the two had their faces covered so he could not recognise them.

The two went away with his cellphone Samsung J5, LG Amplifier, food from the fridge, cosmetics, R3 600 cash and his car, a Toyota Avanza. His car was later recovered in Pienaar parked on the side of the road, locked with no one inside.

“I was called around 11. 30 to be informed that it had been found. The police then took it to Nelspruit Police station where I was called to identify it and it was handed back to me yesterday. The car was fine, only the USB was stolen from the car,” he concluded.

The Station Commander for Matsulu Police Station, Captain Mthunzi said: “The number of cars reported stolen is increasing. Cases of stolen cars have been opened and they are in large numbers” she said.

Mthunzi further explained that there are two groups of people who they are looking for. “There are those who can’t drive who will try and take your car and fail to drive. They only get away with the phone and wallet. We normally find in it abandoned like the recent one that we found along the N4.

Then there are those who can drive, they take everything and get away. We are pleading with community members with information to help us find these culprits,” she concluded.
