Road Accident Fund to assist victims

MBOMBELA- Road Accident Fund (RAF) Chief Executive Officer, Dr Eugene Watson, has sent his heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the commuters who died when a Toyota quantum overturned on the R40 Bulembu Road near Barberton, yesterday.

The accident which took place early this morning resulted in at least 10 fatalities and three injuries.

“We will do everything in our power to ease the emotional and financial burden for all family members affected by this tragic incident,” he said.

Dr Watson added road safety was a shared responsibility for all concerned, and a greater urgency was required to tackle the large spate of accidents in the country.

“As we stress in our ongoing #myroadyourroad campaign, think of others before yourself when you’re on the road. All road users – drivers, passengers and pedestrians alike – are asked to implement unselfish road practices.”
He said the RAF Customer Service Centre (CSC) in Mbombela will be meeting with family members of the deceased.

Consultations will continue with the bereaved families after the burials to originate claims for loss of support for any dependents, and qualifying heads of damages for the injured as stipulated in the RAF Act.

“Our team in Mbombela will be engaging with the families today, extending our condolences and advising them of our services as the consoling arm of government.” said RAF Pretoria Regional General Manager, Dineo Thabethe.
