Schools confident of better results
It is clear that schools are ready and teachers are prepared to go the extra mile in assisting pupils through afternoon studies, revision of past exam papers and study camps
MBOMBELA – Schools around the province pronounced their readiness for the current matric exams.
In a random phone call interview with various principals in the province, it is clear that schools are ready and teachers are prepared to go the extra mile in assisting pupils through afternoon studies, revision of past exam papers and study camps.
Ms Thokozile Masondo, the principal of Cyril Clark Secondary School in Mataffin, says she expects a 100 per cent pass from her 137 grade 12 pupils, although 11 of them were progressed from grade 11.
“The teachers from my school did everything in their ability to assist; we completed the syllabus on time, attended study camps and extra classes. Currently the matrics are camping at the school to give them extra time to focus on their study material and nothing else,” Masondo says.
She added that the pupils each paid R300 for their catering while camping. The amount also covered the security stipends to ensure that the children were safe while camping at school.
“Teachers also come to assist in certain subjects. We keep on motivating them and we will support them until exams are over,” she says.
Mr Joshua Mabuza from Samora Machel Secondary at Mbuzini in the Nkomazi Local Municipality, says Samora Machel is also ready for the exams.
Judging by the hard work and extra effort put in by both pupils and teachers, the school expects a 20 per cent matric pass rate increase from last year’s 60,2.
“We held winter classes and camps and outsourced the best teachers from other schools to help us with certain subjects. The department also supported us with good study material which, we believe, will help us to achieve the desired pass rate,” Mabuza says.
Mr Mbongeleni Mdaka from Lugebhuta Secondary, says although his school had an increase of 100 matric pupils from last year’s 175 candidates due to the system of progressing pupils from grade 11, he is optimistic that they will do better and reach a 100 per cent pass rate.
“We are currently polishing the matrics to make sure they are ready for all the subjects,” he says.
Sitintile Secondary’s school principal, Mr Harold Gondwe, also expects better results, regardless of having progressed pupils.
