Police officer nabbed for two counts of attempted murder

The motive for the attack has not been established and both the woman and the baby were rushed to hospital to receive medical treatment

LYDENBURG – A 29-year-old police officer has been arrested and will appear before the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court today on two charges of attempted murder.

The officer who is yet to be named, was arrested after he allegedly drew out a pistol and shot at a 24-year-old woman and a three-month-old baby girl on Saturday evening.

According to the police, the suspect, who was driving with his wife and friends, stopped the vehicle by the side of the road and shot at the woman and the baby who were on their way to Duma village.

The motive for the attack has not been established and both the woman and the baby were rushed to hospital to receive medical treatment. “His wife and friends managed to disarm him and reported the matter to the police. He will be appearing before court today on charges of attempted murder,” said Spokesperson for Hawks in Mpumalanga Brigadier Leonard Hlathi.
