Sasol orders strikers to return to work today.

Since 25 August 2016, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) has embarked on a protected strike at the Sasol Mining business in Secunda.

With the commencement of the strike, Sasol has held numerous formal and information discussions with the leadership of AMCU in an attempt to find an agreeable resolution to the matter. This includes mediation at the CCMA.

Every year, Sasol Mining holds wage negotiations with its trade unions. This year, the company held wage talks with CEPPWAWU, Solidarity, NUM, SACWU and AMCU. All our trade unions, except AMCU, have signed a wage agreement on 5 August 2016. This comprises a 7% wage increase, effective July 2016, and a 0.5% service increment effective January 2017.

Regrettably, all options to end the strike amicably have been exhausted with no resolution found to end the current impasse with AMCU. In the best interest of our employees, Sasol has decided to take measures to end the protracted strike by AMCU. Sasol has informed the leadership of AMCU that it would be invoking its legal rights, as prescribed by the Labour Relations Act, to bring an end to the strike.

From this point, the strike will no longer be regarded as a protected strike, as per the provisions of the Labour Relations Act. Sasol is committed to providing fair reward packages and conditions of employment for all our employees. To this end, we remain committed to continued engagements with AMCU and all other trade unions in a collaborative and coordinated manner. We remain committed to the safety of our employees, contractors and the community.
