University of Mpumalanga suspends classes

Some of the reasons for suspending classes includes chasing of all security personnel on campus, bringing tyres and sucking petrol from vehicles within the campus and illegally driving around UMP construction cars and tractors.

MBOMBELA – Following the fees must fall protest among university students across the country, management for the University of Mpumalanga have raised their concerns on the university’s security.

They hence decided to close the campus from Friday until October 10.
“Due to security concerns raised by demonstrations on both the Mbombela and Siyabuswa campuses, all academic activities at both campuses are suspended with effect from 12:00 on Friday until October 10,” says Mr Themba Manana, the university’s communication’s manager.

Manana says the decision follows an engagement between student leaders and management.

“The decision came from the following reasons: stoning of police vehicles, barricading of the National Road (D725) , holding the UMP Security Manager as hostage, chasing away of all security personnel on Campus, bringing tyres and sucking petrol from vehicles within the campus and illegally driving around UMP construction cars and tractors,” explained Manana.

He said the engagement was a continuation of previous engagements held with student leaders to find solutions to the memorandum handed out to them on September 26 and the current #FeesMustFall debacle.

“All scheduled tests and assignments will be postponed until October 10,” he adds.

He believes that academic activities will return to normalcy after this break. Management remains committed to continue to negotiate with students to ensure a speedy resolution to this impasse. A special University Council is also planned to address the current challenges.
