Gogo Esther excels in art

Mpumalanga's grandmother of art, Esther Mahlangu is not only passionate about culture, but she is a trendsetter too

This comes after two collaborations that came at the right time as the the country is celebrating Heritage Month.

Two weeks ago this 81-year-old Ndebele artist teamed up with BMW, as well as American singer, John Legend and Belvedere Vodka, in a campaign to fight the spread of HIV/Aids by designing a bottle that is available at selected retailers. The bottle features Mahlangu’s colourful Ndebele beadwork and the international star’s signature.

Mahlangu’s love for art dates back from the her days as a child under the guidance of her mother and grandmother, hence her designs have also been featured on the Fiat 500 and British Airways planes, to name a few.Proceeds of her BMW collaboration will go towards the Art Room, a project that supports childhood development, while John Legend will assist to raise money for the fight against HIV/Aids.

Portfolio of Committee on Arts Culture in parliament, Xoliswa Tom, says the world-famous artist has shown other countries the beauty of being African and have inspired many to embrace their cultures. “It is worth noting that both projects are geared towards worthwhile causes that will positively contribute to society. It is essential that all South Africans support of Mahlangu to help her succeed further,” emphasises Tom.
