While most universities are closed across the country, due to the #FeesMustFall campaign, it is business as usual at University of Mpumalanga .
Yesterday different student’s structures were presenting their own manifestos. Today the university is expected to elect a new Student Representative Council.
The minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande, announced earlier this week that tertiary institutions could hike their 2017 fees by 8 per cent.
The minister’s announcement was followed by violence at various universities, as most students called on Nzimande, and the government, to provide a free tertiary education.
What is #FeesMustFall
#FeesMustFall is a student-led protest movement that began in mid-October 2015 in response to an increase in fees at South African universities. Protests started at the University of Witwatersrand and spread to the University of Cape Town, the University of Pretoria and Rhodes University before rapidly spreading to other universities across the country.
