If you are a person responsible for looking after a child (primary care giver) you could qualify for CSG, a primary care giver can be a parent, grandparent, or anyone who takes care of the child.
The intention of the CSG is to ensure that children attend and complete school to better their future, also to assist poor households to access sufficient nutritional food and also to cater for the basic needs of the child. It is imperative that when you are not the parent of the child but a primary care giver you must get
the consent of the child’s parent/s guardian or custodian to apply.
To qualify,the primary care giver must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee, both the applicant and the child must reside in South Africa, the child must be 18 years of age or younger, must provide a birth certificate for the child, the applicant must provide a 13 digit bar coded identity document, the primary care giver cannot apply for more than 6 six non biological children, the child must not be cared for in a state institution and also the applicant must meet the requirements of the means test.

The means test indicates that SASSA evaluates the income and assets of the person applying for the child support grant to determine if the applicant’s means are below the stipulated amount and also whether he/she qualifies to receive a CSG. It should be noted that the income threshold of the primary care giver if single must not be more than R42 000 and if married R84 000 per annum.
Primary care givers can apply for the child support grant by filling in an application form at their nearest SASSA office, you do not need to pay any money to make the application.
Your application form will be completed in the presence of a SASSA official. When your application is completed you will be given a receipt. The receipt must be kept as proof of your application. You will also need to show certain documents and provide some information which will determine the results of the means test.
The current amount of a child support grant as of 01 April 2016 is R350 which increases every year, the money can be paid out in cash on specific days at paypoints, or you can get the money paid electronically into your bank account. The applicant must remember that normal bank charges apply to any money going in and out of your bank account. You can decide to change the payment method at any time by filling in a form at a SASSA office, but the change will only happen a month later.
It will take 30 working days for your application to be processed and checked and either approved or declined. If your application is declined, you will get a letter explaining why it has been refused and how
you can appeal. SASSA Mpumalanga would like to warn child primary care givers not to misuse the money meant for the child by gambling, buying alcohol, or taking care of themselves not the child, by so doing it is a crime and one can be prosecuted.
