White River Sawmill workers demands salary increment

The workers demand a R500 increase for all workers. Currently the least paid worker receives R2 600 a month and the most paid workers including those with scarce skills including fitters and artisans include only R3 400.

WHITE RIVER – More than 190 workers of the White River Sawmill company have been engaged in a protected strike demanding salary increment, better working conditions and fair treatment among workers for all tribes for over a week now.

The strike started last week Monday and since then nothing goes in and out of the company. This morning vehicles trying to enter the company’s premises were denied entry and turned back by the striking working.

The workers demand a R500 increase for all workers. Currently the least paid worker receives R2 600 a month and the most paid workers including those with scarce skills including fitters and artisans include only R3 400.

They also demand 21 days annual leave, provident fund and better working conditions. The workers promised to continue with their strike until their demands are met.

The company’s management were not found for a comment.

W/O Gugu Phiri spokesperson of White River police said the protest was peaceful and calm.

“Nothing was reported to us since the beginning of the strike. We also have our police on the scene to monitor the situation,” she said.
