Suicide a silent killer among youth

PIENAAR- Suicide remains a cause for concern among the youth in the country.

A 21 –year pupil from Guduza Secondary School in Zwelisha left his classmates in shock early this month, when he committed suicide at his home after being stood up by his matric farewell partner.

The spokesperson for the local police, Capt Jabu Ndubane confirmed the incident by saying, “It’s true that on Friday a pupil committed suicide at his home. Such occurrences are very rare in this area, especially among school children.”

• Teenage suicide still a problem

Ndubane appealed to the youth to speak out when they have problems. “It’s very important for children to have a good relationship with their parents, so they can feel comfortable to speak out when there’s something bothering them,”she said.

She added that during school visits, they worked closely with the Department of Social Development and education department,to provide a platform for pupils to share their problems in order to receive assistance.
