Designer heads for the big city

He still could not believe he was one of the top-six fashion designers chosen to showcase their clothing.

KABOKWENI – Renowned local fashion designer, Freedom Ngomane, will represent the province at the Gospel Fashion Week to be held at Sunninghill, Johannesburg on August 6.

In an interview with a jubilant Ngomane, he said he still could not believe he was one of the top-six fashion designers chosen to showcase their clothing. “It’s so humbling to be part of the top six, it’s a motivation on its own.

I must say it was not an easy journey for me. We were competing against different fashion designers from the different provinces and we were 30 in total. By God’s grace, I made it this far.”
What helped him reach such great heights? “Being creative, using unique fabrics and adding natural colours, I think that really made me stand out.

“I not only focus on street fashion, but also design formal clothes for both males and females,” he says.
In 2012 he represented the province at the Slbyna Fashion Awards that were held at Gold Reef City in the category of the best fashion designer in South Africa.

“Even though I did not win, it boosted my confidence. I have learnt a lot because we also got a chance to exchange ideas on how to take this industry to the next level,” he concluded.

As part of marketing his clothes, Ngomane hosted a Long Walk to Fashion in one of the busiest streets of the Mbombela CBD – Brown Street – which attracted many people.
