Eight suspects arrested for attempted murder

KRIEL – Eight suspects arrested in connection with attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms are expected to appear before the Kriel Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
“A number of other charges will still be added to them in due course as some of them are also linked to a Cash-in-Transit case from Witbank,” explained Hawks spokesperson, Capt Dineo Sekgotodi.

The suspects’ recent arrest comes after members of the Hawks followed a tracker’s information about a hijacked BMW.

Sekgotodi added that the tracker’s information led the Hawks to a house in Kriel where the suspects started shooting at the police, injuring one of them on his shoulder.

“The member was air-lifted to hospital and a task force was called to assist the members, as a result eight suspects were arrested and the ninth one was fatally wounded,” she explained.
She adds that a number of weapons were found in possession of the suspects. These include two R4 rifles, one R5 rifle, one AK 47 and one pistol were seized from the suspects plus their vehicles, a BMW, a Mazda drifter, a Corsa bakkie and a Chrysler Voyager were recovered.
