Local river cleared to ensure a free flow

The public is urged to join the drive to keep the rivers clean and clear to allow the free-flow of clean and healthy water for the benefit of the country and our neighbouring countries.

MBOMBELA-  The Department of Water and Sanitation in association with its agencies, the Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency (IUCMA) and the Komati Basin Water Authority (KOBWA) in partnership with the Nkomazi Local Municipality will be cleaning the Inkomati catchment to allow our rivers to flow freely to ensure access to all.

The Mahhorwane river has been identified in Nkomazi Local Municipality.

The Department with sector stakeholders is clearing up rivers to ensure the free flow of water as part of the volunteer activities that are associated with the spirit of Mandela Month in July to protect our freshwater ecosystems and achieve water security. The Department with its partners will be clearing and cleaning rivers of all pollution and encourages the public to join the drive to keep our rivers clean and clear to allow the free-flow of clean and healthy water for the benefit of the country and our neighbouring countries.

The need for water security, particularly in the face of global climate change, calls for a national and unified approach to protect our freshwater ecosystems that include rivers, wetlands and the broader catchments.

Rivers are key assets of the nation and the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), as the custodians of water resources has therefore adopted a premise that healthy rivers allow for a healthy nation.

Clearing our rivers of all the foreign objects and pollution will ensure that we all benefit from the added-value products of healthy rivers and have access to clean water for basic human needs.
